Need help with modifying a pipe roller
I broke down and bought a harbor freight pipe roller and I would like to modify it to look like the swag one. I want the quick-change slots not the pins. Yes, I am sure I could draw it up myself but I need this for a job next week and time is not on my side. I was going to just build my own roller but like I said I do not have the time. If anyone can help me with this it would be great. I would even do some file trading for the right file.

Oh? What is the HFT Skew # for that machine?
If it is one of these, it is not a pipe ROLLER. It is a pipe BENDER.

Re: Need help with modifying a pipe roller
Oh, man! I forgot about that one! Yes ... They still sell those? I heard they were discontinued. They work well when you add their powered pipe threader as a motor drive. I really should think about adding one of those to my shop, just because. The one I had my eye on before priorities shifted, was the Baleigh Hydraulic Pipe Roller. Grizzly Tools also sells a nice one. But at some $25K, I could not justify the expense at the time.ROKCRLER wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 1:30 pm joe, this one https://www.harborfreight.com/tubing-roller-99736.html

Re: Need help with modifying a pipe roller
Honestly, it looks like it needs to be redesigned, so that the center vertical axis of the jack is directly over the pinch wheel and clear of the springs. The jack uses a centered piston pump, so it should really have FOUR springs, one at each corner, that allow free access to the piston arm without needing to deal with the interference of the spring. I don't know what those two small rectangular slots at the top of the tower sides are for. They seem to be irrelevant. I would mount it to a rolling stand and power it with a reversible 3HP motor with a gear reduction box.

Re: Need help with modifying a pipe roller
Most of the jacks that I currently own have the pump handle offset like this one, so if in a pinch, this may work without a major revamp

Re: Need help with modifying a pipe roller
The springs are offset so they are clear of jack.
The jack is over the center roller.
It's set up for an HF power pipe threader.
Two springs work just fine.
I used a 3/4 top plate where the jack ram lands
It works great for what it is and I would not change anything.
It has done everything I need it to do.

Re: Need help with modifying a pipe roller
I have been kicking around modifying this old dinosaur to something a little easier to manhandle. It is a late 19th century angle iron roller with 2 handles so that 2 men can crank it. I have only used it a few times and it is very slow going. But mainly it is way too heavy for my use. I am Kicking around using the dies and chucking the rest. Its about 300 lbs,, possibly borrowing some of this design from the ones here on this thread

Re: Need help with modifying a pipe roller
That could be easily modified. Remove one gear and handle completely. On the other side remove the handle, machine a chain gear to fit the dies, buy a gear reduction motor and mount below with a chain to drive the dies. I would wire in a foot control switch for forward and reverse as it makes it very easy to work alone that way. Two hands free to control the work.tinspark wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 5:35 pm I have been kicking around modifying this old dinosaur to something a little easier to manhandle. I would modify the way to put pressure down on the top die to make it a single control instead of having to screw two handles down. Perhaps a bridge across with a bottle jack or bigger screw post.

Thats a great idea. I purchased an old , but in perfect condition , 9” logan lathe from an old buddy who rebuilds them, and have been itching to mess with the thing. I might get to play around with my lathe that thing when I get into rebuilding it.tnbndr wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 9:32 amThat could be easily modified. Remove one gear and handle completely. Re: Need help with modifying a pipe roller
I sourced the motor for my sheet roller off of ebay years ago. Just need to keep watching. I bought a nice forward reverse foot pedal from MetalPro as they are local and I like the one on my MetalPro IronWorker.
Get as slow a gear reduction motor as you can and you can also play around with pulley sizes for the correct speed.
